Coolers, fryers and lights: cutting a restaurant's power use
Restaurants and stores run equipment all day, so small fixes add up. These tips come from ENERGY STAR's guides for restaurants and convenience stores.
Keep coolers clean and sealed
- Clean the cooling coils on the backs of all coolers and freezers.
- Make sure door seals close tightly, and replace gaskets that are torn or flat.
Turn off what isn't working
ENERGY STAR puts it plainly: equipment left on when it isn't doing useful work costs you money. A closing checklist for fryers, ovens, warmers and lights makes it a habit.
Buy efficient when it's time to replace
ENERGY STAR says its certified commercial kitchen equipment, such as refrigerators and fryers, offers energy savings of 10 to 70 percent.
Switch the lights to LED
An LED uses up to 90% less energy than an incandescent bulb, ENERGY STAR says, and lasts much longer.
